Compression therapy is a recommended method to effectively alleviate some of the symptoms of varicose veins. Gradient compression stockings deliver a controlled amount of pressure which is greatest at the ankle and gradually decreases towards the top of the stocking. This pressure promotes circulation, helps control swelling and relieves tired and achy legs. This prevents superficial veins from becoming distended from pooling blood.
Compression stockings cannot, however, cure the underlying vein disease, or reflux, that causes varicose veins. Although compression therapy can be used to manage symptoms, your varicose vein condition can still progress to the point that more advanced treatment is necessary.
It should also be noted that many insurance providers require compression therapy before you can become eligible for more curative treatments. Please read our blog post on compression stockings.
