Sclerotherapy is a cosmetic procedure used to treat spider veins. The procedure involves injection of a chemical sclerosing agent; thus, resulting in an injury to these tiny vessels. This causes them to scar shut and over several weeks the body will reabsorb the vessels.
The number of veins injected in a single session is variable, depending on the size of the vessel and the amount of vessels present. Anywhere from one to several sclerotherapy sessions may be needed to treat your spider veins.
You can expect bruising for 7-14 days post-procedure. It is best to avoid sun exposure and/or wear sunblock during the 3-4 week recovery time, to avoid skin discoloration of the treated areas.
Generally, spider veins respond to a sclerotherapy session over 3-6 weeks, while larger patches may need 3-4 months of therapy.
